Official Fairfield Recycling Guidelines: Recycle Right. Every Time.

At United Home Sanitation Services, we are committed to keeping Fairfield green. We strictly follow the RecycleCT Foundation guidelines to ensure your recycling actually gets recycled.

Why “Recycling Right” Matters: Recyclable materials become contaminated when mixed with non-recyclable trash. When unapproved items enter our Single Stream Recycling system, they can contaminate an entire load of perfectly good recyclables—sending the whole batch straight to the incinerator instead of being repurposed. Please use this guide to prepare your bin correctly.

The Golden Rule: How to Prepare Your Recyclables

Before placing items in your bin, make sure you follow these simple steps:

DO: Empty, clean, rinse, and repeat for each item. Keep all items loose in the bin!

DON'T: Shred, box, or bag your items.

Please ensure these items are clean and loose.

  • Paper & Cardboard: Newspapers, magazines, food and beverage cartons, mixed paper, and flattened boxes.
  • Glass: Bottles and jars of all colors.
  • Metal: Food and beverage cans, aluminum foil, and clean foil containers.
  • Plastic: Jugs, tubs, and lids.

Do not place these items in your recycling bin. They contaminate the load, damage processing machinery, or pose a safety hazard to our workers.

Plastics, Film & Foam

  • No Plastic Bags or Wrap: These get tangled in sorting gears. (Please return them to a retailer/grocery store drop-off).
  • No Styrofoam: Must go in the trash.
  • No Black Plastic: Even if it has a recycling symbol, black plastic containers must go in the trash.
  • No Mylar Products: Chip bags, candy wrappers, and helium balloons.

Tanglers & Machinery Hazards

  • No “Tanglers”: Hoses, wires, chains, electronics, twine, and plastic straps can shut down the recycling plant.
  • No Textiles: Clothing and linens do not belong in the bin. (Please use local donation programs).

Dangerous & Hazardous Materials

  • No Combustibles: Propane tanks, batteries, and non-food grade aerosol cans (like spray paint and pesticides) are dangerous and should never be binned.
  • No Biohazards or Sharps: Diapers, sanitary products, medical waste, razors, and hypodermic needles.

Household Goods & Non-Recyclable Paper

  • No Glass Bakeware or Ceramics: Keep Pyrex, dishware, and ceramics out.
  • No Coated Paper: Hot and cold paper cups, straws, plastic drink lids, and wax-coated items (like paper plates).
  • No Contaminated Paper: Napkins, paper towels, and tissues.
  • No Shredded Paper: Loose shredded paper cannot be processed.
  • No Wood or Rubber: Pencils, wooden crates, rubber, and latex items.

The “Too Small” Rule

  • No Tiny Items: Keep out any loose items that are smaller than 2×2 inches.
